Rolex and Motor Sports

Rolex GMT Master

The Rolex Cosmograph "Daytona" is the Rolex model that remains strongly associated with motor sports and all forms of car racing. This relationship entered the limelight when the legendary actor Paul Newman wore a Rolex Cosmograph “Daytona,” which featured a black "exotic dial" with white registers, in the car racing film Winning. On account of Paul Newman's star power and immense popularity, all the exotic dial versions of the Rolex Cosmograph became hugely popular.

The powerful association of the Rolex Cosmograph with motor sports led directly to the naming of the Daytona. The name “Daytona” comes from the famous Daytona Beach in Florida that includes some of the biggest names and races in the racing world.

Today, Rolex sponsors an array of professional racing events including:

The Rolex 24 at Daytona

Rolex MotoringA 24-hour endurance race, it is one of the most prestigious motor sport events that Rolex has associated itself with. Held every January at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, this event adopted its name in 1991 when Rolex became the title sponsor. This endurance car race takes place over a 5.73 km combined race course along with portions of the NASCAR tri-oval and an infield road course. The event is the first major sporting event each year in the United States, preceeding the Super Bowl in professional football. The major attraction of this event is the ceremony where all the winning drivers (in all classes of motor racing) are gifted with a steel Rolex Cosmograph "Daytona" wristwatch, a true symbol of their excellence.

The Le Mans 24 Hours

Rolex has not restricted itself to US car racing but has associated itself with motor sports across the globe. The Le Mans 24 Hours is a legendary race that has been testing the endurance and skill of motorists since 1923. Held annually at Le Mans, Sarthe in France, it is also known as the Grand Prix of Endurance. The race takes place on a traditional circuit with closed public roads. Every year, it is organized by the Automobile Club de l'Quest, and Rolex has become one of the race's most reliable sponsors.
