Always Made For The Depth – Rolex Submariner And Mark Freuder Knopfler
Rolex introduced the Rolex Submariner in the year 1953 as the first water-resistant Rolex timepiece. The first water-resistant Rolex Submariner was able to withstand a depth of 100 metres, which approximately a massive 330 feet under the surface of water. Few years later, the water resistance ability was strengthened by its patented triple-seal Triplock winding crown, which made it capable of withstanding depths of up to 300 meters (approximately 1000 feet under the surface of water). Oyster case is another unique feature which needs a special mention here. Every Rolex timepiece has an Oyster case which has the access for a group of selected professional Rolex specialists.
Very few people in the world are permitted to peek inside a Rolex Oyster. The authorised Rolex retailers possessing the necessary know-how, skills and equipments to gain access are the only ones who are allowed inside a Rolex Oyster. The back of the Rolex Oyster is hermetically sealed to the case with a massive torque of five newton meters. This helps in creating an environment that protects the movement of the watch from shocks, pressure, dust, water or any other intrusive element pervading in the environment. Such protection is extremely rare in other timepieces of the world.
In the year 1926, Rolex invented the Oyster case in order to protect the movement of the watch from water and dust. Later on in 1953, the Twinlock winding crown was patented by Rolex to ensure further protection for professional divers. Rolex increased guarantee of waterproofness for the diving watches by introducing the Triplock winding crown in 1970. The Triplock winding crown comprises of 10 different elements crafted from the most reliable materials. Once they are assembled together, they screw down onto the Oyster case as tightly as a submarine hatch. The Rolex Submariner’s rotatable bezel is another important characteristic of the watch.
The graduations in the dial of the Rolex Submariner provide the diver with an accurate indication of diving time. For safety reasons, it only rotates counter clockwise in order to leave no room for the overestimation of dive time or the amount of breathing mix remaining in the tanks. The luminescent capsule ensures legibility irrespective of low visibility environments. A bezel with a blue, black or green Cerachrom insert graces the Rolex Submariner-Date’s 40 mm case.
Made from extremely hard ceramic material, the Rolex Cerachrom insert has wonderful corrosion-resistant properties. Its colour remains unaffected from the strong ultra-violet rays and also it is virtually scratchproof.
